1 Corinthians 12:10
To another working of miracles; and to another prophecy; to another DISCERNING OF SPIRITS ; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues. But all these worketh that one and the selfsame spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
1.Discernment is listed here as a gift of the spirit.
2.Lets see how it was used in the bible by the Lord himself, and by others.
And there sat a certain man at Lystra;, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mothers womb, who never had walked; the same heard Paul speak who stedfastly beholding him and PERCEIVING THAT HE HAD FAITH TO BE HEALED, said with a loud voice, stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.
1.An example of Paul discerning by the spirit of God within him, faith in another man, faith enough to be made well.
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and saith of him BEHOLD AN ISRAELITE IN WHOM IS NO GUILE !!!
1.Example of Jesus discerning what kind of spirit was in a man.
2.Jesus read Nathanael like a book, without guile means without deceit.
3.Christs statement of seeing Nathanael by the Spirit before He saw him in the flesh convinced Nathaneal of Christs sonship to the Father.
4.Read John 1:42 for another example of Jesus doing this same thing.
But if I cast out demons by the spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come unto you.
1.How do we discern and cast out demons, by what spirit ?
2.We are now functioning in Gods kingdom! As kings and priests !
3.We discern all other spirits by the Holy Spirit of God at different times for different ministries.
For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God; for God giveth not the spirit by measure to Him.
1.Jesus was whom God had sent and he spoke only the words of God.
2.Jesus had the spirit without measure, and discerned other spirits fully.
1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man recieveth not the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
1.Natural man means a man living without the spirit of God within him,, he has not been born again .
2.The things of the spirit therefore are foolish sounding to him.
3.He needs the spirit of God within him first in order to understand the things of the spirit.
4.So spiritual discernment comes into our lives, by first being born again and having the spirit of God inside of us.
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. 1.We can see here that discernment also comes thru our faithful obedience to Gods word and we become mature and can quickly tell what is from God and what is from the enemy, we now have a light to our feet, our obedience has given us discernment.
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
1.We can see here that the written word of God acts as a discerner to our own thoughts and intents of our heart.
2.Do you think Gods rhema words, His words to our hearts, have the same function in our lives as well ? Think about it.
So we can see that we have been given as believers, a powerful tool against the enemy. When we dont know quite what we are looking at, and dont know if something is from The Lord or not, we can call upon the spirit of God to help us discern it. The working of the gift of discernment can also be used to actually see temporarily into the spirit world. We will be able to see the kingdom of darkness, or the Lord himself, or angelic hosts, because they belong to the spirit realm. This is a powerful tool in ministry and God will use it to bring about salvation and deliverance for those who need it .
